About

This is the project website of IPv6 Deployment Monitoring, a project commissioned by the European Commission.

Why measure IPv6?

In Europe we will soon be running out of IPv4 addresses. To keep extending the possibilities of the internet, IPv6 has been created. The European Commission (EC) has adopted an Action Plan to support the deployment of IPv6. The Action Plan states that at least 25% of users should be able to connect to the IPv6 Internet and to access their most important content and service providers without noticing a major difference compared to IPv4. To gain insight in the deployment of IPv6 and to see wether we're on track for the Action Plan, we need to measure IPv6 use.

How measure IPv6?

To be able to measure the use of IPv6, a user oriented measurement for deployment monitoring is needed. Current measurements are mainly technology based, and do not comply to the needs of the EC. Therefore the DG Information Society and Media of the EC started this research project (no. 30-CE-0231908/00-77). For more information about the DG, please visit their website.

This project

This project runs for two years, and started in January 2009. A consortium of TNO and GNKS is doing the IPv6 deployment research through metrics analyses, questionnaires and live traffic measurements in order to determine the number of IPv6 enabled users in Europe in the period 2009—2010.

The project IPv6 Deployment Monitoring has four main objectives:

  1. Further developing the proposed user oriented methodology in order to determine the number of IPv6 enabled users.
  2. Conducting two specific IPv6  measurement campaigns for Europe in 2009 and 2010.
  3. Assessing the global deployment, quality and security of current IPv6 products and services by studying available statistics, performing additional surveys and interviewing companies and worldwide experts.
  4. Disseminating the results in such a way that the EU can use them directly for further policy and actions.
